A Long Family History in Media

Dr Hillyard's family have lived in Delaware County Since the time of William Penn. Dr Hillyard's grandmother's family grew up on her family's farm in Brookhaven.  She married Dr Isaac Pike Jr. whose family was in Media.  Dr Pike was one of the first dentists in Delaware County.  He began his practice in 1909 after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School.  Dr Pike's original office was at the corner of State and Olive on the second floor.  In those days dentists had strong legs as all their equipment was run by foot pedals.

Dr Hillyard's Grandparents lived at 2nd and Monroe Streets in Media, and when Dr. Hillyards's uncle Dr. Isaac Pike III who took over the practice from his father he built his office on the side property immediately adjacent to his parent’s home.  Dr Hillyard spent many childhood weekends there visiting his grandparents and playing in the dental lab in the new dental office that his uncle built on the side property.  This is when Dr Hillyard knew he wanted to be a dentist and he has never wavered from his love for the art of dentisrty.  Dr. Hillyard graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985 and became the third generation dentist in the family.

In 1993 Dr. Hillyard's Uncle retired and Dr. Hillyard took over the practice and in 1995 he moved the practice to its current location at 47 State Road.

The farm house built in 1916 was originally the home of Pierson Pike, Dr Hillyard's great uncle.  The property at one time had 35 adjoining acres and was an asparagus and celery farm for many years.  Pierson's daughter Anna Retta Cushman lived in the home until it was purchased by Dr Hillyard and his wife Diane in 1995.  They wanted to keep the original house and the history that it held and painstakingly renovated the building and added an addition off the back which now is where the dental operatories are located.  In 1997 Dr. Hillyard and his wife received a plaque and recognition from the historical society for their efforts in restoring this historic property.
