Your Role in Proper Dental Hygiene

To keep your teeth and gums healthy requires a consistent daily routine. Plaque, the cause of tooth decay and one of the causes of gum disease, becomes increasingly hard to remove the longer it is allowed to stay in place. Due to this, we recommend a daily oral hygiene routine that includes:

  • Brushing your teeth at least twice a day – Brushing your teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush at least twice daily helps remove plaque before it has a chance to harden. Using a toothpaste that contains fluoride will also help strengthen your enamel and help prevent tooth decay.
  • Flossing your teeth – Floss at least once a day, but shoot for twice. Floss removes plaque and food particles in between your teeth and helps prevent issues including gum disease.

If you would like, you can add mouthwash to your daily routine, but this is not always necessary. Dr. Hillyard can discuss which mouthwashes will best meet your needs during your regularly scheduled dental visits.

Regular Office Visits

Your at-home routine is essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy, but it is not enough to prevent the development of oral health issues. To ensure optimal oral health, you should visit our Media office every six months for professional teeth cleanings and thorough examinations.

These visits allow Dr. Hillyard to perform hands-on and diagnostic examinations, such as digital x-rays, to detect potential oral health issues. When found early, many of these issues can be treated with minimally invasive techniques. But when left undiagnosed, even minor oral health issues can fester and lead to root canals, tooth extraction, and other more invasive treatments.
