Gum Disease

Media, Newtown Square, Wallingford, Swarthmore and Delaware County, PA

It is estimated that a majority of adults suffer from some form of gum disease. Because gum disease is both an oral and systemic health issue, Media dentist Dr. Gregory Hillyard takes the detection and treatment of this problem very seriously.

The treatment of gum disease is one of the primary focuses of Dr. Hillyard’s practice. During your regularly scheduled dental hygiene appointments, Dr. Hillyard will carefully inspect your gums for any sign of disease to ensure you get prompt and effective treatment as soon as problems are noticed.

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum disease is a progressive disorder, but its progress can be rapid if left untreated. The first symptoms of gum disease are swollen or bleeding gums, but this can quickly lead to:

  • The presence of puss on the gums
  • Increased tooth sensitivity or tooth aches
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Receding gums or gums that pull away from teeth
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Tooth loss

Smokers are at a higher risk for gum disease, but no one is immune. If you notice any of the symptoms of gum disease in between your biannual visits to our office, please call 610-566-0291 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hillyard as soon as possible.

Treating Gum Disease

The earliest stages of gum disease can often be treated with prescription mouthwash and a more rigorous at-home oral hygiene routine. Once the disease has progressed, Dr. Hillyard will need to consider more advanced treatment options such as:

  • Scaling and root planning
  • Laser gum therapy

The treatment best suited to meet your needs will depend on the progression of your gum disease.

The goal of treating gum disease is to remove infection and damaged gum tissue and seal remaining tissue to help prevent future infection. While gum disease treatment can be performed under local anesthetic, if you are anxious about the procedure, Dr. Hillyard can discuss your sedation dentistry options prior to your treatment.

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms of gum disease, please contact Dr. Gregory Hillyard today to schedule an appointment. We serve patients in Media, Newtown Square, Wallingford, Swarthmore, and Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
