TMJ Symptoms

Media, Newtown Square, Wallingford, Swarthmore and Delaware County, PA

While TMJ is one of the most common disorders, it is also one of the most frequently misdiagnosed. This is largely due to the fact that the symptoms of TMJ may not always indicate a problem with the jaw. Sadly, a misdiagnosis of TMJ may lead to ineffective treatments or to treatments that serve to numb the pain but fail to correct the underlying problem.

If you suffer from any of the symptoms of TMJ, only a neuromuscular dentist can properly detect and treat it. Media, Pennsylvania dentist Dr. Gregory Hillyard has years of experience helping people in our area deal with TMJ. Please call 610-566-0291 to schedule your evaluation today.

TMJ Symptoms

TMJ may produce symptoms in and around the jaw including:

  • Pain or swelling
  • Limited jaw mobility
  • Lockjaw
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding noises when opening or closing your mouth

These problems should be immediately brought to the attention of Dr. Hillyard.

The symptoms of TMJ are not always limited to the area around your jaw. Some symptoms that may accompany jaw abnormalities include:

  • Ear ringing or pain without the presence of infection
  • Pressure behind the eyes
  • Vertigo or dizziness
  • Chronic tension or migraine-type headaches
  • Aching facial pain
  • Back and neck aches
  • Numbness or tingling in hands and fingers

Left untreated, TMJ may also lead to uneven tooth wear, tooth loss, postural changes, and digestive system disorders. For these reasons, you should contact Dr. Hillyard at the first sign of any of these symptoms.

TMJ Treatment

Dr. Hillyard uses the latest neuromuscular technology to detect TMJ and offers the safest, most effective forms of treatment. This may include immediate pain relief and muscle relaxation through gentle electrical stimulation, retraining of the jaw muscles with a mouthguard or oral splint, or correcting bite issues through clear braces or dental restorations. The treatment best for you will be determined during your neuromuscular dentistry consultation.
