What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are made up of three different parts. First, a titanium post is placed into the jawbone. Next, a piece called an abutment is used to connect the post to the final restoration. The final restoration is most commonly a dental crown, but dental implants can also support a fixed bridge or denture.

Dental Implant Benefits

There are many benefits to going with dental implants over other tooth replacement options. First, dental implants give you the stability that other solutions can’t match. Since the implant post fuses with the jawbone, you have a solid restoration that lasts for decades. You don’t have to make any diet changes or worry about your restoration slipping or falling out.

Implants give you the most natural look and feel for a restoration as well. Particularly if you’re going with a dental crown, it’s something that’s custom-made to match the rest of your smile. Since a dental crown is with a single implant, it gives the separation that’s natural with the rest of your teeth. Even with other restorations, they’re customized to fit the color, shape, and size to blend with the rest of your smile.

Because they’re a fixed restoration, they’re easier to maintain. You simply have to brush, floss, and visit the dentist regularly like you would with your normal teeth. Removable options often involve adhesive and you have to remove them to clean them thoroughly. This isn’t a problem with implants.

When you lose a tooth, the jawbone around that area begins to deteriorate. With other restorations, this process continues even with the restoration. Implants are the only solution that replaces the tooth root as well as the tooth itself. This stops the jawbone from deteriorating any further and can help to reverse deterioration that’s already happened.

The Dental Implant Process

Before every restorative procedure, we’ll have a consultation with the patient to determine the best course of action. Dental implants do require a certain amount of healthy bone tissue and overall oral health. If you’re a good fit for implants, we’ll use the 3-D technology available at our office to fully map your oral structure and determine the best implant location.

Dr. Monroe has extensive post-graduate training in dental implants, allowing us to complete the procedure all under one roof. The implant posts will be surgically placed in your jawbone. They take about 3-6 months to heal, fusing with the jawbone. When they’re healed, abutment pieces will be placed and a custom-made dental restoration will complete the process.
